Cloth Simulation Project Report: Numerical Methods for PDEs

چکیده
The goal of this project was to implement and study cloth-simulation. Cloth simulation is a subject of significant interest to the Computer Graphics (CG) community. This project was specifically based on the work in [1] and a lot of concepts are also based on [2]. CG characters need to wear clothes, which in-turn need to be animated to make the clothing look realistic. Since clothes don’t have active controllers built in, their behavior can classified as being passive response to the environment. This means that behavior of cloth is relatively well-defined once the external forces acting on the cloth are known as opposed to say a human who can exert forces and torques to control his/her motion as desired. The modelling of such passive systems is best accomplished through physicsbased simulation. The variability in the motion of a cloth comes only from a set of stationary material properties. Among these, the properties most pertinent to motion are the stretch, compression and bending resistance/response of the cloth. Most types of cloth have a strong resistance to stretch, where as they buckle (fold over) very easily when subject to compressive forces. Mathematically, this behavior can be expressed as a partial differential equation of the following form (see [2] for details):

Comparing Efficiency of Integration Methods for Cloth Simulation
Any cloth simulation system needs efficient numerical methods for integrating the equations that describe the mechanical behavior of the discrete representation of the cloth. Choosing the adequate method should be done with full knowledge of the advantages and weaknesses of the main techniques. This paper presents a quantitative comparison of the efficiency of the most common integration techni...
متن کاملImplementing Fast Cloth Simulation with Collision Response
This work details and implements efficient techniques for cloth simulation, both in the area of numerical simulation and the area of collision detection and response. Emphasis is put on the efficient implementation of implicit numerical methods with many improvements toward better realism, as well as computation simplicity. A constraint-based collision response scheme is adapted to this scheme ...
متن کاملA framework for interactive and physically realistic cloth simulation
1. Abstract Cloth simulation is an important research area in the field of deformable object modelling in computer graphics. Deformable objects allow much greater realism to be achieved in graphically generated scenes. However, in interactive environments rigid bodies usually dominate due to their computational efficiency. Cloth simulation addresses many issues in computer graphics such as defo...
متن کاملA real-time cloth draping simulation algorithm using conjugate harmonic functions
This paper describes a simplified mathematical model and the relevant numerical algorithm that simulates a draped cloth over a virtual human body. The proposed algorithm incorporates an elliptical, or non-consecutive, method to simulate the cloth wrinkles on moving bodies without having to reference the results of past drape simulation time steps. A global–local analysis technique was employed ...
